PROJECT:

Code Consulting – Photovoltaic Manufacturing Facility, Mesa AZ
This project involved the design and construction of a manufacturing plant of approximately 1,400,000 SF. Challenges from a code compliance perspective included the occupancy classification – a variety of chemicals are used that exceed the aggregate quantity allowed in a non-H occupancy, yet the density of these chemicals was low. The construction type of the building was at issue given the vast size (essentially unlimited area). In addition, fire sprinkler and smoke control systems were at issue as a result of the un-subdivided size of the manufacturing floor (approx. 1,000,000 SF). The project required the development and negotiation of a series of alternative method and means (AMM) strategies that had to be proven viable and code compliant by engineering analysis of the alternatives. The successful development, negotiation and ultimate approval of all proposed AMMs saved this owner many millions of dollars in construction cost.
